Huron River Inn, once known as the Burton Manor (& tavern), was originally built in 1860 and operated through the Civil War years.  It was the center of social life in what was then called Huron Station (Rockwood), catering to salesmen, hunters, and fishermen.  Available at the tavern were whiskey, wine, and cigars which also arrived by train.  A keg of good whiskey cost $13 and sold for $0.03 a glass.

One Saturday night in 1872, a man named John Strong, owner of the mill and General Store across the river, stood on a box near the tavern and railroad and persuaded the townspeople to change the name of the town from Huron Station to Rockwood.

Through the years, Burton Manor changed hands many times, eventually expanding to include a livery business with the hotel and then changing the name to the Varney House.

One Sunday morning, in the early 1900s people coming out of church services, saw clouds of smoke coming from the Varney House.  The men quickly ran to the hotel, hauling out tables, chairs, and all the bottles they could carry.  A bucket brigade was formed, hauling pails of water from the river.  Despite their efforts, Varney House burned to the ground.  All was not lost, however.  The tables and chairs were brought into the barn.  The bottles that were saved, were set up behind a temporary bar and business continued as usual.  In 1907, out of the ashes arose the Rockwood Hotel and today is known as the Huron River Inn.

Huron River Inn is well-known to be haunted.  One story is of a woman wearing a bonnet who has been seen sitting at the bar.  Another story is of a shadowy man standing in the old coal bin entry in the basement.  There have been stories told of loud noises and children’s laughter coming from the stairway leading to the second floor, which was once used as a hotel.

Today, the old hotel is now called Huron River Inn Bar-B-Q.  Under new ownership, HRI Bar-B-Q serves exceptional BBQ  along with an enjoyable and lively atmosphere, all while, preserving HRI’s amazing history.  So, stop by and pay us a visit.  We look forward to seeing you!
